How could a humanities student benefit from entrepreneurial skills?
HUBS’ Growth Hackers student team employs part-time students from various fields within Tampere Universities community. Discover the perspectives our team members studying social sciences have on entrepreneurship!
The authors of the story, Iris and Leila, have been part of the team since the beginning of 2024. Adeliina, on the other hand, joined in the fall of 2024. Together, they have written this blog.

We offer a wide range of courses both online and on campus, exciting events, and top speaker recommendations. At HUBS, you also get opportunities to explore your strengths, challenge yourself, and learn new skills. Entrepreneurial skills are, in many ways, also future working life skills. At the core of entrepreneurial competences are creativity, decision-making, resilience to uncertainty and setbacks, goal-orientation, initiative, responsibility, teamwork, and networking. Mastering these skills will help you stand out and thrive in your career – whether as an entrepreneur or an employee.
How Do the Social Science Students In Our Team View Entrepreneurship?
Adeliina, Social Sciences, Major in Social Anthropology
Entrepreneurship might seem like a distant or even off-putting career option for a social sciences student – at least, that’s how it felt for me before getting to know HUBS. It seemed like entrepreneurship was all about making money and some kind of exclusive club I had no place in. Working in HUBS’ student team has shown me that entrepreneurial skills are valuable for everyone, regardless of whether entrepreneurship is the right career path for them. Now, I see how entrepreneurial skills can help me contribute to building a society where environmental and social sustainability are at the forefront.

Sometimes it feels like my social sciences studies are all about reading and writing.
More than once, I’ve heard fellow students express frustration about how little our studies in social research connect to practical work or hands-on experiences. Alongside academic reading and writing, it’s been fascinating to see how the practical approach of entrepreneurship and work-life studies has added depth to my studies. I’ve had the chance to meet people outside my usual bubble – people from different fields of study, with diverse life goals, backgrounds, and perspectives on the world. Expanding my network has, in turn, taught me more about humanity.
Now, I see how entrepreneurial skills can help me contribute to building a society where environmental and social sustainability are at the forefront.
Working and learning in an international team has further developed my teamwork skills. At HUBS, we focus on ensuring smooth communication within the team, fostering commitment from all members, and promoting effective feedback exchange. Developing such teamwork and communication between groups has become something I’m truly interested in.
Perhaps entrepreneurial skills aren’t just about growth, money, and popularity, but about building a meaningful future for yourself and others, setting boundaries and sticking to them, and nurturing creativity within the environment we live in.
Iris, Political Sciences, Major in International Politics
City centre campus students should get excited about HUBS, as entrepreneurial skills, along with presentation and branding expertise, will be valuable in the working life. It’s worth noting that (smarter) entrepreneurship is needed to change the world. Innovations are essential for climate action and building fairer societies. Social entrepreneurship, in turn, can create rehabilitative work opportunities and jobs for people with partial disabilities or long-term unemployed individuals.

A humanities or social science student shouldn’t completely dismiss entrepreneurship as a potential career path. One can employ oneself as a speaker or trainer, for example, and genuinely work towards advancing the causes and values that matter most to you. Overall, entrepreneurial skills help you bring your great ideas to the forefront, raise awareness among a larger audience, and turn dreams into reality.

HUBS also provides every higher education student with the tools needed to articulate, recognize, and expand their own skills. The barrier to completing sustainable entrepreneurship studies is very low, as you can take a couple of credit courses from the 24h Online Library at your own pace, anywhere. (Plus, some of them have been spotted on Helpot nopat on Jodel.)
Dare to try and let go of your prejudices! From my own experience.
A big thank you for sharing your insights and opinions! HUBS wishes Leila and Iris all the best for the future and we thank them for an amazing year with us!
