A Serendipitous Journey to European Innovation Academy
In 2023 HUBS proudly selected some of our most inquisitive and driven students to attend the European Innovation Academy. Get to know Mehdi’s journey of learning, collaboration and building a successful innovation!
My name is Mehdi Kouhihabibi, a master’s student in Power Electronics and Electromechanics at Tampere University. I’m eager to share my unique experience at the European Innovation Academy (EIA) in Porto, which unfolded in an unexpected and thrilling manner.
EIA 2023 wasn’t merely an academic endeavor; it was a life-changing experience.

Part 1: The Rollercoaster of Emotions
Initially drawn to the Porto EIA 2023, I eagerly applied, pouring my enthusiasm into a meticulously crafted cover letter. The initial disappointment of not being accepted was soon replaced by a surprising twist— an urgent email revealing a reserved spot due to a participant’s cancellation. A single seat remained, and I had to act swiftly.
Part 2: Unveiling the EIA Experience
Decoding the European Innovation Academy: The European Innovation Academy (EIA) stands as a monumental startup camp, hosting around 550 students globally. For three intense weeks, participants immerse themselves in proposing and pitching startup ideas to real investors. The journey begins with a pre-week, setting the stage for collaboration, idea sharing, and self-preparation.
Part 3: Day 0, a Pivotal Beginning.
One of the pivotal moments was Day 0, focused on team formation and understanding the EIA’s program. Teams of five, comprising specific roles like CEO, CPO, CMO, CDO, and CTO, were created. This marked the inception of my team, where I merged my electrical engineering concept with a fellow student’s fantastic idea.
The Birth of “Canary”: Innovative Solutions for the Mining Industry
Our team’s idea revolved around the mining industry, presenting sensors for gas detection under the name “Canary.” The name pays homage to the historical use of canaries in mines to detect oxygen levels. Our innovation aimed at significantly reducing human fatalities in the mining sector, making it both practical and beneficial.
Part 4: Navigating the EIA Journey
Beyond Lectures: Mentorship and Workshops. Amid daily lectures and group work, EIA offered invaluable mentoring sessions, workshops, and clinics, aligning with specific goals like defining the market and revenue models. Days 10 and 15 marked the pinnacle, with creative pitches and the final presentation to investors at Palácio da Bolsa.
Part 5: Triumph and Recognition
From Pitch to Victory. Our team’s journey culminated on Day 15, where we presented our startup to investors. The nail-biting moment of being announced among the Top 10 teams was unforgettable. To our joy, we not only secured a spot but also clinched the Nixon Peabody Trademark Artisan Award, a testament to our hard work and innovation.
Conclusion: Beyond Academia
An Unforgettable Experience in Porto. The EIA 2023 wasn’t merely an academic endeavor; it was a life-changing experience. Amidst the intensive work, I forged lasting friendships and enjoyed the vibrant city of Porto. The rewards, both personal and professional, have fueled our ongoing commitment to turning our innovative idea into a reality. As I reflect, I can’t help but hope for another chance to join the academy in the future.
Big thanks to Mehdi for sharing you EIA story!
